How to make travelling on the long road convenient with a big family.

Are you planning a road trip? I love a road trip, being passenger is the best thing and a road trip is one of my favourite things to do. However, as a parent, there is so much to think about before you hit the road and I want to share my tips with you.

Firstly, plan your trip accordingly. Who am I kidding?!? Doing anything with kids is so unpredictable and you are bound to NOT follow any type of travel plan. But we can however plan how we are going to keep the kids occupied for the unpredictable road trip. Here are 8 tips to assist you on your next road trip.

  1. You WILL need to stop at all the rest stops so make sure you add in atleast 30 extra minutes per stop to your travelling time.

  2. Make sure all the kids go to the loo at every single stop, even if they don’t have to, but have a back up plan and keep an empty, disposable bottle with a lid for those emergencies. This is boy mom trick.

  3. Make a little snack pack for each kid consisting of finger snacks, water and sliced fruit. If I know we’re travelling through lunch, I would pack in boiled eggs and crackers or even chicken drumsticks.

  4. Don’t forget the wipes! Even though I no longer need wipes for nappy changes, there is always wipes in the car or in someones bag. This is great to have to freshen up in the car as well as to clean dirty, sticky fingers.

  5. Download some of your kids favourite sing along songs. I love downloading a soundtrack of the boys favourite tv shows and surprise them on the way, the excitement on their little faces are priceless.

  6. Allow screen time. We give the kids free reign to screentime on road trips and their bodies actually manage the time for us. They would either dose off or put their devices down themselves to admire the surroundings. Screentime also allows for us as parents to have some quiet moments in the car.

  7. Have a surprise toy for the kids and hand it to them when they become tired of keeping each other company or when the noise levels are a bit too much. This will keep them occupied for a long time as they play with their new toy.

  8. Make napping comfortable. When travelling with little kids, they are bound to take a nap so make sure you have a neck pillow and they are upright in their car seat. Take their favourite blanket or soft toy.
