A Family Safari at Aquila Private Game Reserve

There was so much excitement in our household leading up to our first family safari, the boys have never seen real animals in their lives. I’m sure they were picturing a zoo in their minds.

Family quality time is something we treasure so much, and we want to do more family getaways more regularly. I am so grateful that we could tick this off our family travel bucket list, we definitely need to do more of these.

We stayed overnight at Aquila Private Game Reserve with our 3 boys (ages 5 and 6). What an unforgettable stay.

Aquila Private Game Reserve and Spa is a family-friendly African safari just 2 hours’ drive from Cape Town and is home to lions, elephants, buffalos, leopards and rhinos.

The overall family experience at Aquila was really good, the staff were friendly and accommodating to the kids and their needs.

An overnight Safari includes lunch, dinner and breakfast per night. An afternoon and morning safari, complimentary eco-synergy project tour, access to the overnight mezzanine level bar and lounge, use of the exclusive overnight guest restaurant. Complimentary WIFI and access to the pool and wet bar with use of loungers, towels and the kids access to the children’s entertainment area

MORE ABOUT THE RESERVE

The reserve has a large swimming pool with a poolside bar, serving cocktails and ice-cold beverages for socials around the 35m long crystal-clear, infinity pool. There are two dedicated dining areas and a buffet-style restaurant that serves local cuisine and traditional South African dishes. Overnight visitors have the opportunity to relax in the private, mezzanine-level bar and lounge with magnificent views of the reserve

A wireless internet connection is available throughout the lodge area and the rooms.

MORE ABOUT THE FAMILY ROOM

Our family room was well situated with easy access to the car park, pool and entertainment areas. This Premier Family Lodge Room is connected by a common passageway, creatin a private, shared space for families travelling with small children, ensuring safety and tranquillity. I love that the room did not have a TV, honestly there was so much anyway.

The room had coffee and tea making facilities, an in-room safe, sleeper couch and basic seating, USB charging points, fan and air conditioning, mini-fridge (with complimentary water only, shampoo and hair conditioner and body and hand lotion.

MORE ABOUT ACCOMODATING THE CHILDREN

There is no age restrictions for children doing the game drives. The horseback and quadbike safari however have an age restriction of 16 years old and a maximum weight restriction of 95kg.

There is a park with jungle gyms, putt putt and supervised play area for the kids.

MORE ABOUT THE GAME DRIVES

All the game drives are guided and led by an experienced guide who shares exciting stories and facts about the animals and the area.

The guides try to spot as many of the Big 5, as well as other animals indigenous to the land, as possible. The rangers do their best to find the best views of animals that they can within your 2 -3 hour game drive.

MORE ABOUT THE FOOD The food at Aquila is all halaal. Drinks are not included with the buffet and are for the guests to settle either when they are dining or when they check out.

The buffet breakfast includes a selection of croissants, breads (even gluten free), continental breakfast offerings, charcuterie, cheese, eggs and hot breakfast offerings.

WHAT TO PACK

We packed really lightly. I ensured that the kids had 2 tshirts per day and only 2 pants, pjs and swimsuits and this was sufficient.

This was a full on family experience and we had the absolute best time.

This trip is highly recommended.
