5 Essentials for a successful weekend road trip with young kids.

Sometimes roadtripping with kids is not as happy as we plan or predict, kids are unpredictable and with 2 or more kids it could become frustrating for parents.

One of the most important things to do when planning a family trip is to ensure that your child’s needs are considered and catered for.

Yes! Our family trips revolve around our kids. From the accommodation, the activities, the snacks, the meals, the medication, the list is never ending. But today, I want to share with you the 5 essentials for a successful weekend road trip with young kids.

1. Individual snack packs/lunchboxes

There’s no secret that my kids are the world's best snackers and it’s the reason it is on the top of my list. Snacks are a road trip essential for my kids, and us as adults!

Even if a road trip is an hour, it could really seem forever for little kids. I love packing in separate snack bags for the kids while teaching them how to enjoy them in moderation. They know those snacks are for the road and when it’s up, there’s no more.

My kids love fruit snacks, but I love adding in Pringles as they can close this and some biltong, plus a sweet treat.

2. Wet wipes

Yes, my kids are no longer babies but wet wipes are always essential. I mean we all know that there are a million uses for wet wipes.

Wetwipes are perfect for cleaning up the kids after they have their snack or to freshen up after pit stops. But here's a mom hack, when the kids get fussy in the car I ask them to clean their toys with a wetwip or the window. This keeps them entertained for a long time.

Dad loves using the wetwipes to freshen up his face too or wipe down the steering wheel.

3. Sunglasses

Not only a fashion accessory, but a road trip necessity!

Sunglasses come in handy when the sun rays are shining on the side where a kid is sitting, make sure the sunglasses offer UVA and UVB. I found some really stylish ones from The Crazy Store.

4. Less Screen Time and headphones

It’s a given that we all allow screen time in the car on long trips, however this can cause motion sickness, so we make sure this time is monitored well. We also want them to enjoy the road trip and take in all the beauty instead of being glued to their screens.

This has offered a calmer road trip, and sometimes when there’s a bit too much going on, we let the boys watch their screens with their headphones.

5. Plan stops with physical activity.

My boys are super busy together, so we know when it’s time to stop and let them get rid of some energy. We make sure to pack a ball or frisbee for those random stops. We try to find kids’ playgrounds or eatery stops with some grass, it’s essential to check these places before the trip so you can plan your travel time accordingly.

I hope you found this helpful.

Happy road tripping.
